RBI Seen Selling Dollars to Support Rupee After Fed Rate Hike

Author

Traders say the Reserve Bank of India has been selling dollars in both onshore and offshore foreign-exchange markets to bolster the rupee.

The dollar rose 0.1% to 96.0963 per dollar, while the 1-month non-deliverable forward briefly gained about 0.2% before holding at 96.37.

The moves followed the Federal Reserve’s expected rate hike on Wednesday, with higher U.S. rates reducing the relative appeal of Indian bonds and other emerging-market assets.

Over the past several weeks, the RBI has continued intervening in the FX market, and the rupee has fallen more than 6% this year, underperforming other Asian currencies.
