Lighter Cuts Block Verification Time to About 1 Minute After System Upgrades

Author

Lighter, a decentralized exchange, says its verification system has improved significantly, lowering the average time to verify a block from roughly 5.3 minutes to about 1 minute over the past month. The company attributes the gains to two separate upgrades, per Foresight News.

The first upgrade introduces a heavy-light split that partitions the verification circuit by transaction complexity. This allows simple transactions, which account for more than 98% of activity, to incur lower verification costs and, in effect, halve the verification time.

A second upgrade stemmed from a prover-optimization competition with Eigen Labs aimed at infrastructure-level improvements to the Plonky2 prover. The initial results went live on August 23, delivering another substantial reduction in verification time by more than half.

Lighter’s verification stack runs on a cluster of Apple Silicon Mac mini machines plus an elastic cloud overflow layer. As throughput improved, cloud overflow usage fell from several hours per day to nearly zero. The baseline withdrawal finality time also dropped from roughly 21–22 minutes to about 16–17 minutes.

Additional optimization work from the prover competition continues to roll out. In a test environment, verification time for a 500-transaction block fell from about 187 seconds to under 30 seconds, representing roughly a 10-fold improvement since mid-July. Lighter said it will announce the competition winners in the coming days.
