South Africa Intercepts 50 Suspected Parrot Eggs at Johannesburg Airport

Author

South African authorities intercepted 50 eggs believed to be from endangered parrots at Johannesburg's main airport last Thursday, with reports that some of the eggs have hatched since.

A 50-year-old Thai national was arrested on suspicion of attempting to smuggle the eggs in a homemade incubator bag carried as hand luggage, according to the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment.

The eggs are being treated at the National Zoological Garden in Pretoria, where they are under intensive care as officials investigate the case.

If convicted, the suspect could face a fine of up to 10 million rand, a prison term of up to 10 years, or both, the department said.

Initial investigations indicate the eggs belong to a parrot species protected under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).

The department said the arrest followed a joint operation involving the Green Scorpions and police, and noted that a 23-year-old Thai citizen was also arrested in July at OR Tambo International Airport over an alleged attempt to smuggle 418 parrot eggs.

Dallas Fed: Tokenized Deposits Could Reduce Banks' Long-Term Rate Risk Capacity

Author

Dallas Fed economists estimate that tokenized deposits could reduce U.S. banks' capacity to hold long-term interest rate risk by about $700 billion if savers become 10% more sensitive to rates, a figure reported by Foresight News. A separate scenario puts the decline at roughly $580 billion if deposits exit banks 10% earlier.

The calculations assume deposits remain in banks for an average of four years, and that so‑called other deposits currently support about 80% of the industry’s long‑term rate exposure. The researchers say tokenized deposits would move funds on-chain, enable programmable payments and real-time settlement, and could allow yield‑seeking savers to switch banks almost instantly.

They caution that smart contracts and AI agents could automate such movements, weakening deposit stickiness and raising banks' funding costs, which could in turn influence borrowing costs for households and businesses.

A study of Brazil's Pix instant payments network found that greater use of the system has led local banks to hold more liquid assets and reduced the scale of credit intermediation. The Clearing House is developing a tokenized deposit interoperability network for cross‑bank settlement, with involvement from banks including Bank of America, Citigroup and Wells Fargo.

Lighter Cuts Block Verification Time to About 1 Minute After System Upgrades

Author

Lighter, a decentralized exchange, says its verification system has improved significantly, lowering the average time to verify a block from roughly 5.3 minutes to about 1 minute over the past month. The company attributes the gains to two separate upgrades, per Foresight News.

The first upgrade introduces a heavy-light split that partitions the verification circuit by transaction complexity. This allows simple transactions, which account for more than 98% of activity, to incur lower verification costs and, in effect, halve the verification time.

A second upgrade stemmed from a prover-optimization competition with Eigen Labs aimed at infrastructure-level improvements to the Plonky2 prover. The initial results went live on August 23, delivering another substantial reduction in verification time by more than half.

Lighter’s verification stack runs on a cluster of Apple Silicon Mac mini machines plus an elastic cloud overflow layer. As throughput improved, cloud overflow usage fell from several hours per day to nearly zero. The baseline withdrawal finality time also dropped from roughly 21–22 minutes to about 16–17 minutes.

Additional optimization work from the prover competition continues to roll out. In a test environment, verification time for a 500-transaction block fell from about 187 seconds to under 30 seconds, representing roughly a 10-fold improvement since mid-July. Lighter said it will announce the competition winners in the coming days.
