BHP Sells Closed Kambalda Nickel Concentrator and Land to Gold Fields

Author

BHP Group has agreed to sell its closed Kambalda nickel concentrator in Western Australia, along with the associated land and mineral rights, to Gold Fields Ltd. The sale price was not disclosed, and Gold Fields said it will assess the facility's long term use.

The deal also includes mining leases and mineral rights. The Kambalda plant was shut in mid 2024, and BHP paused nickel operations across Western Australia amid a global nickel surplus and a slump in prices.

BHP said it is still evaluating its nickel business, with decisions on disposing of the remaining assets, including the nickel refinery, smelter and two large mines, expected in February 2027. The group booked a $2.5 billion impairment on its nickel assets in 2024 as nickel prices fell following a surge in Indonesian output.

Gold Fields has been seeking gold infrastructure and mining assets in the Kambalda region. It is also considering a second takeover offer for Northern Star Resources, which holds several large gold projects near Kambalda.

St. Cloud Financial Credit Union Becomes First to Add Bitcoin to Core Ledger

Author

The St. Cloud Financial Credit Union in Minnesota says it has become the first credit union to add Bitcoin to its core ledger and now holds real Bitcoin for members.

The credit union describes its custody approach as a hybrid model described in a patent application, providing each member with separate Bitcoin ownership within a multisignature vault.

The institution reports custody of more than 20 Bitcoin and notes that the service is not being aggressively marketed. Members can buy and sell Bitcoin directly, and the credit union aims to bring ordinary users into the Bitcoin ecosystem while planning to integrate the Lightning Network.

The leadership also discussed the relationship between stablecoins, the U.S. dollar and Bitcoin as a new monetary network, and explained the difference between Bitcoin exchange-traded funds and credit union custody.

St. Cloud Financial Credit Union is navigating Minnesota custody laws, awaiting review by the National Credit Union Administration under the CLARITY Act. It has launched the Cloud Dollar stablecoin, operates under a cooperative ownership model, and says it must control its own payment rails while continuing to educate skeptical users.

China Could Spark Bitcoin's Next Supercycle, Says Joseph Chee

Author

Former UBS Asia investment banking head Joseph Chee said China could trigger the next Bitcoin supercycle if Beijing allows citizens to trade digital assets under tight controls.

BeInCrypto describes Hong Kong as a testing ground, while mainland trading remains illegal and Beijing continues to focus on capital flight and market volatility.

Chee added that there is no timeline for such a shift, and China has not announced any plan to extend Hong Kong's framework to the mainland.

Abstract to shut down its network on December 15, 2026; unmigrated funds will be inaccessible

Author

Abstract has announced a gradual shutdown of its network, with the entire operation slated to end on December 15, 2026. Odaily reported that funds not migrated by that date could become inaccessible.

Users can move assets through the official migration center or via the native cross-chain bridge, which is expected to introduce about a three-hour delay in transfers.

Abstract argued that a consumer-focused crypto chain is difficult to sustain as an independent model, citing limited DeFi support, weak on-chain liquidity, and stalled network growth.

The Ethereum Layer 2 network, launched by the Pudgy Penguins team, said it has attracted more than 400,000 users and deployed more than 144 applications.

Abstract also warned users to be vigilant for fake migration websites.

An eight-day surge on Solana accounted for 94.5% of the transactions in the sample.

BeInCrypto's provisional readiness assessment gave micropayments the top score, 60.7 out of 100, though the report notes that concrete evidence of actual use remains limited for the institutional workflows examined.

Salesforce Trader Sells Nov. 20 Iron Condor for $3.54 Credit

Author

An options trader sold a Nov. 20 short iron condor on Salesforce, collecting a total credit of $3.54. The position combines a 210/200 put spread with a 260/270 call spread.

If Salesforce remains between the short strikes through expiration, the trade targets a maximum profit of $354, with breakeven levels at $206.46 on the downside and $263.54 on the upside. The maximum loss is $646 if the stock moves outside the 200-270 range before expiration.

The shares were near $230, having risen to about $252 after Salesforce reported its August quarterly results. ServiceNow earnings on Oct. 27 could influence Salesforce, given their history of moving in sympathy with each other.

Hormuz Strait Oil Flows Rebound, but Tanker Attacks Threaten Recovery

Author

Oil exports routed via the Strait of Hormuz have shown a rebound, but the improvement remains fragile amid ongoing attacks on vessels by Iran.

According to Sina Finance, the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) said nearly 20 merchant ships, most of them tankers, were attacked over the past month while transiting the Strait of Hormuz, the Persian Gulf, and waters off Oman.

Windward senior maritime intelligence analyst Michelle Wiese Bockmann estimated that about 2% of ships crossing the strait were attacked in the third quarter.

Kpler put average crude shipments through the strait at roughly 10.3 million barrels per day in the week ended last Saturday, about 23% below the prewar baseline of 13.5 million bpd.

Windward estimated average crude shipments at 9–10 million barrels per day, versus a prewar baseline of 14.5 million bpd.

The article notes that the current flow of oil now heavily depends on a large U.S. military deployment to protect tankers along a route south of the Omani coast.

It also said ship-to-ship transfers in the Gulf of Oman reduce the risk of Iranian attacks but require more vessels, and tanker shipping costs to China have risen to about $1 million per ship per day.

Nvidia-backed Reflection AI unveils Beam, its first frontier open-weight model

Author

Reflection AI, a Brooklyn-based startup backed by Nvidia, has introduced Beam as its first frontier open-weight model.

The company says Beam competes with mainstream open-source models on advanced reasoning benchmarks while dramatically reducing token costs and inference compute compared with rivals.

Beam is a text-only mixture-of-experts model trained with high‑compute reinforcement learning and is designed for reasoning, coding, and agent tasks.

Beam comprises 501 billion total parameters, with 23 billion active parameters. It was pretrained on 23.8 trillion tokens and features a context window of up to 1 million tokens.

Reflection notes that its performance claims have not been independently verified, but says Beam scores on par with Z-ai’s GLM-5.2 on advanced reasoning benchmarks, outperforms current mainstream Western open-source models, and requires three to four times less inference compute. The company positions Beam as a flagship model for enterprises, the public sector, and developers.

Euro Area Retail Sales Rise in August as Fuel Purchases Fall

Author

In August, euro area retail turnover rose 0.1% on the month, reversing July's 0.6% decline, according to Eurostat data cited by Sina Finance. Economists had expected a 0.3% gain.

Sales of food, beverages and other non-fuel goods edged higher, with Germany showing a notable improvement in August.

Fuel sales fell 1.9% from July as oil prices rose during the month.

Capital Economics' Harry Chambers noted that fuel purchases may fall again if oil prices rise further in September, pointing to Brent crude briefly rising above $105 a barrel.

On a year-over-year basis, August sales were 0.8% higher than a year earlier. Chambers cautioned that consumer spending is likely to stay resilient but cool from the brisk pace recorded in Q2.

Pantheon Macroeconomics' Claus Vistesen argued the data imply weaker retail consumption in the current quarter, with July and August averaging about 0.3% below Q2. He also suggested that the retail figures underestimate overall consumer strength, citing strong car sales and resilient services spending.
